Ahead of the 40th Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan unveiled its electric-powered Pivo 2 concept car. Designed for urban use, the Pivo 2 features a 360-degree revolving cabin, inherited from the first-generation Pivo, allowing the driver to always face forward while driving, even when parallel parking, and to access the unique front door from any direction. The three-seat car is equipped with safety systems such as Around View Monitor (AVM), Distance Control Assist System (DCAS) and also a Robotic Agent that uses facial monitoring technology to interact with the driver. |
Volvo / PML finally demo a vehicle running with 4 in-wheel motors. The spec quoted by Volvo is MUCH less than was originally announced by PML in 2006. Volvo says these demo motors are 50 hp (36kw) with 1000nm. PML have said ever since 2006 these motors would have 160hp (117kw) So they have about 1/3rd the power they said and I'd have to say the torque figure is extremely suspect too. The Volvo s30 is a small lightweight car, yet on the only slight grade on this video it slows down substantially and the video is edited well before it crests the hill. In my experience, with their claimed total of 4000nm of torque, coming from electric motors which have 100% torque from zero rpm, the S30 wouldn't even notice a hill twice as steep or twice as long as the one in the video. I regularly drive up a much steeper hill @60kph on cruise control with a 1600kg car that has 1200nm at the back wheels with the engine rpm steady @1500 rpm. It wouldn't even notice the grade in the video so I'd have to say there's NO WAY the PML wheel motors on this Volvo S30 have 1000 Nm each! At least they got one driving under it's own power! |
One of the showstoppers at the upcoming 2007 Tokyo Auto Show is bound to be the Nissan Pivo 2, a ball-shaped electric vehicle that can maneuver into tight parking spots without backing up and features a robotic bobblehead in the cabin that can detect the driver's mood by analyzing changes in facial expressions. |
This week we take a look into the future of motoring, according to Nissan. We've got exclusvie footage of the company's cute concept car, the Pivo 2. |

When shopping for a new car, you might be looking for fuel efficiency, style, and safety. But after seeing the new Nissan Pivo 2 electric concept car, you might just have to add “talking robot” to your list of must-haves. This car’s personal robot doesn’t just talk — but it reads and detects a driver’s mood as well, in order to help you drive safer and better. On display at the recent Geneva Motor Show, the Nissan Pivo 2 is truly an electric vehicle of the future. And according to these guys, the future looks pretty darn cute! Nissan Pivo 2, concept vehicle, Geneva Motor Show, electric vehicles, green car, eco car, green car congress, EV, electric cars, electric motors, concept car, electric car. The Nissan Pivo 2 offers a collection of technologies, which at the moment might seem a bit far fetched, but will soon be a normal part of our everyday lives. The Pivo 2 comes equipped with an ultra-thin electric motor that delivers twice the power of a standard electric motor. It has four total motors, one on each wheel, and together, they can provide about the same amount of torque as V8 engine and the power of a subcompact vehicle. It also comes with a brand new laminated lithium-ion battery that is the same size as a standard battery, but provides twice as much capacity. The Pivo 2 can turn 360 degrees thanks to its incredibly ingenious geometrical design. The cabin fits 3 people, which is not shabby for this very tiny vehicle. And most importantly, it comes with a little robot helper, RA, a being who’s sole existence is to improve the state of mind of the driver. This little robot friend can infer what the driver is feeling thanks to facial and voice-recognition software. The future, it seems, will not only be greener, but cuter as well.
